Advice From The Fan Page

My biggest concern is that though there have been cases where mining companies have taken on completely unskilled people in the past, there seems to be many on this page who think by getting their HR or basic riggers ticket will allow them to walk into a mining job, when there are a lot of tradesmen with those tickets and more struggling to find work... Please, don't leave your current jobs until you have definitely snagged a job, because it would be terrible to see anyone become destitute as a. result of going in half cocked!
Well said mate! But your words will fall on deaf ears. As long as I have known every company has all these inexperienced workers running around for them. Yeah I know you have to get experience but be honest about the level experience you have. I've worked with a lot of guys who come onto a job & then realise they don't have the necessary experience which means those of us that have been in the game a while spend all our time babysitting them & keeping them out of harms way. This is a dangerous industry with little room for error. At the end of the day we all want to go home the way we came to work. Don't be responsible for a injury or a death!!!!

I just spent some time in Gladstone (Qld) and the talk is that it will all be kicking off up there again @ the end of January...There is (according to rumour) $30bn worth of projects and they will be needing loads of people for all sorts of roles..Accommodation will be the hardest thing to get as all hotels are solidly booked, housing to rent is around $500-$700 per week so if you know anyone up there and can bunk with them, that'll get you a local address and a start...

Tracking the Trends 2013: Top ten issues in mining

Mining companies are facing rising costs, falling commodity prices and other challenges in these volatile times. However, Deloitte’s new Tracking the Trends 2013 predicts that companies will be able to thrive into the future if they can set solid strategic direction and hold that course amidst shifting industry realities.

Deloitte’s global network of mining professionals has identified 10 of the main challenges likely to confront the sector during 2013 in our fifth annual report Tracking the Trends report.  The report considers these issues and offers solutions that mining companies could adopt in response.
The 10 trends identified and described in the report are:
1.Counting the costs - Paying the price of bullish behaviour
2.Managing demand uncertainty - Conflicting market indicators magnify  volatility
3.Capital project deceleration - Quality trumps quantity in the project pipeline
4.Preparing for the M&A storm - Market indicators point to rising deal volumes
5.Governments getting greedier - The cash cow is bleeding amid heightened resource nationalism
6.Combatting corruption - Miners are being held to higher standards
7.Climbing the social ladder - A new level of responsible behaviour
8.Plugging the talent gap - Long-term skills shortages still loom
9.Playing it safe - Looking beyond historical data to improve safety outcome
10.At the IT edge - Getting the most out of emerging—and existing—technologies

Why Companies Don't Get Back To You

Why is it that none of the big companies inform you why you have not got past the 1st stage? The responses they send are all generic! I put in the effort to fill out the forms correctly but they do not even bother to call you with a reason so at least you know why you are not getting anywhere.”It’s in their policies, it’s possible a legal reason.I know it would be nice for them to give you some insight about why you haven’t progressed but imagine how many people would generally apply for the one position… They could be there for weeks.Time consuming! Sorry since the sheer volume of applications most jobs not just in mining receive it is never going to happen
Actually if you even get a generic response you’re doing well.. Load of company’s don’t comment. Some take months to start the interview process.
you may have to improve your resume and cover sheet just keep sending it in and ring them every day till you get what you want don’t give up there already getting paid annoy them to till they get back to you it will happen with persistence
When you are one applicant in 200 do you really think they are going to give you a personal sorry kiddo?
maybe they should work out a better system then if they want to run professional businesses” they want people to work for them they should be the ones chasing people up for work that have put the effort in, whether your number 1 on the list or 100″i have generally received emails in returns but a lot of people don’t & should get replies.
They must all have some kind if rating/culling system in place due simply to the volume of applications. How else do they shortlist? It wouldn’t take much to send generic feedback based on this criteria and this may even be helpful to the applicants.
The next time you get asked if you have experience……don’t say no, say you have the knowledge and the awareness of operating safely within a mine site and that you can carry your experiences over where you can apply your trade in the sector.
The volume is huge. Put the word mine in an add and your guaranteed 300+ apps.
legally they have to advertise a job when a lot of the time someone who works there has a friend or relative that will pretty much have that job before it is advertised

Interview Questions

What questions were you asked when you went for an Interview?
Why do you want this job?
On regular basis how times a week do use drugs? I said every couple of days when i take panadol
Whenever I’ve had interviews I always seem to get asked. How do you deal with a conflict? Or how do you deal with someone you don’t get along with. Had to bend the truth a little in my answers though
Name one time you had to bend or break a safety rule to get the job done, answer NEVER
Just had an interview for an apprenticeship through sucrogen (sugar milling, not mines). There was a vast range of safety questions, where would i like to be in 10 years’ time? What do i know about the company? What do i know about the job applying for?
Tell me of 3 health and safety risks you think you could come across in this role? What sort of social/cultural environments do you like being in?
What made you apply for a position with us?
Strengths, weaknesses, problems come across and how u solved
What is your attitude to safety?
Do you have a problem with shift work / standing or sitting for long time, try also ask eat u know about the company and its operations sometimes so it’s good to research
What u know about the company
Strengths and weaknesses, dealing with conflict, safety attitude and reason you believe you are suited to the role.
Name of company, title, job description, dates of employment
What were your responsibilities in your previous position?
Have you worked with someone you didn’t like? If so, how did you handle it?
What Have You Been Doing Since Your Last Job?
Are you willing to work overtime? Nights? Weekends?
What are your salary expectations?
What interests you about this job?
What can you do for this company?
Why are you the best person for the job?

Some stuff to practice on before going for an interview with a larger mining company.Something that I learnt in training is the S.T.A.R question. It was designed by BMA I think and lots of other companies are now using it.

Situation

Task
Action

Result
S: What situation arose that presented an unsafe workplace. Does not have to be mining related, just to show them that you have the right mindset. Eg: Person attempting to work on a chair
T: What task was being performed at the time the situation arose. Eg: Team member was required to change a lightbulb.
A: What action did you take. Eg: Told said person that what they were doing was unsafe and that maybe they should use appropriate equipment such as a platform ladder or get maintenance to follow up on it as they might not have permission to carry out such work.
R: What result came out of your actions: Eg: The person decided it was to unsafe to perform the task and sought after management advice or used correct procedures. Near miss was reported to correct management staff or as required by workplace procedures.
Doesn’t matter what you did or do, if you didn’t report it you may have well as walked away. Don’t think your being a brown noser by reporting near misses to management and taking precautions to protect people. This is what HR in Mining companies want to see.
